Gal 3:13
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
The cross was designed and used to execute criminals in the slowest, most painful, agonizing, and humiliating way possible, reserved only for slaves, pirates, and traitors.
Being such an unspeakably horrifying way to die, Roman citizens were not subjected to it.
Anyone hanging on a cross was of no value whatsoever. They were a curse.
When Paul wrote to the Galatians about the nature of Christ’s death, they knew exactly what he was talking about because they knew what the cross signified.
It is still a matter of debate as to the translation of the Greek term rendered ‘cross’ ‘crucifix’ or ‘stake’.
Either way, nowhere in the bible are we told to venerate the cross/stake, or use it to venerate ‘what it represents.’
Nor is it going to serve as a magic talisman, superstitions, use of images in worship and ‘magic’ were not looked upon highly in scripture now were they?
I see many people who wear the cross, or have cross tattoos, (Body markings, also frowned upon) who are by no means living a Christ-like life.
How we show we are christian and respect his sacrifice is by following his life example, commands, and commemorating something he told us to do in scripture.
Not by having a pagan phallic symbol around our neck.
